As the only dedicated marine mammal rescue facility in Canada, we are often the first responders for marine mammals in distress, especially here in British Columbia. Our team is made up of skilled RVTs, whose expertise is essential in every step of marine mammal rescue, rehabilitation, and release.
You may be wondering what an RVT is?
RVT stands for Registered Veterinary Technologist, and if you have pets then you’ve likely met a few of them in your lifetime!
RVTs are integral members of a veterinary team and undergo extensive training to do so. They are responsible for obtaining diagnostics such as x-rays, administrating medications, husbandry, running and monitoring anesthetic, surgical assistance, nutrition management, and so much more.
At VAMMR, RVTs play an even larger role.
From leading and executing rescue operations to caring for over 100 seal pups, supporting our disentanglement program, and overseeing volunteers, our RVTs truly do it all.
✅ Calling in an animal in distress? An RVT will answer the phone.
✅ Travelling 6 hours to disentangle a sea lion? An RVT is in the driver’s seat.
✅ Supporting a stranded porpoise in the water? An RVT is holding the sling.
✅ Releasing a seal pup? An RVT is opening the kennel door.
But the work doesn’t stop there.
RVTs are also involved in training new team members, coordinating outreach and education efforts, and working closely with local organizations to ensure the continued health of marine wildlife in our waters. They handle the behind-the-scenes logistics of rescue efforts while also being on the frontlines of animal care.
Our RVTs are the heart and soul of our operations—without their unwavering dedication and expertise, we simply couldn’t carry out the crucial work of rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing marine mammals.
We are SO thankful for each and every one of our RVTs!
